Jean-Luc Godard wanted Woody Allen to play in an adaptation of King Lear. He therefore goes to New York to convince the American director. Godard shoots the conversation and inserts some Woody Allen's favorite music (Gerschwin, jazz), excerpts from movies and Hopper's paintings to show how Woody Allen is "the photographer of the city".
