A special welcome for… The Specials!
There are only a few days left before the groundbreaking film The Specials, directed by Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, arrives in theaters.
For 20 years, Bruno and Malik have lived in a different world: the world of autistic children and teens. In charge of two separate nonprofit organizations, they train young people from underprivileged areas to be caregivers for extreme cases. It’s an exceptional partnership, outside of traditional settings, for some quite extraordinary characters.
The hotly anticipated The Specials pays tribute to these underappreciated superheros with an accurate depiction and tone unique to them. During preview screenings, The Specials was a hit with the public and critics alike. During promotion for the film, the two directors wanted to expand on their project by talking more about these educators and young people with autism. The duo are adept at approaching subjects that seem impossible to deal with and know how to put genuine words and day-to-day struggles over trite sentimentality.
Did you know that the story of The Specials was inspired by two real-life associations?

The Specials is more than just a film: it’s the unique result of the joint efforts of an entire team. As such, Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache decided to cast two big movie stars, Vincent Cassel and Reda Kateb, and allowed them to work with their non-professional co-stars—playing both the characters (actual young people with autism) and volunteers—in a way that would enable them to shine too. With The Specials, actors became educators and educators became actors.
