Mexico 86 is a comedy inspired by Mexico’s very real — and completely absurd — last-minute attempt to host the 1986 World Cup. The film stars Diego Luna (Andor, Narcos, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Daniel Giménez Cacho, and Karla Souza. It is directed by Gabriel Ripstein (who also co-wrote the film with Daniel Krauze) and produced by Gaumont USA.
The true story behind the film
Originally awarded to Colombia in 1974, the tournament was ultimately given up by the country in 1982, which was unable to meet the financial requirements imposed by FIFA. In just a few months, Mexico entered the race and was chosen as the host nation, despite political tensions, a fragile economic climate, and even… an earthquake.
