Italy, April 25, 1943: Mario, who dreads the Allies' arrival, hands over his mayor's seat to Attilio. Putting the affairs of the village in order, Attilio incurs Grippa's hostility. When the latter dies, Attilio is accused of his murder. The fascist police investigate, but the village protects Attilio. A series of gags ensues...
