In 1895, Jules Fadinard takes a carriage to his wedding. As it passes a young married woman called Anaïs flirting with a hussar officer, Jules's horse eats her straw hat. The officer demands that the bridegroom repair the damage caused by his horse. So Jules finds himself on his wedding day running around town in search of the exact same hat while the guests, relatives and friends soon become embroiled in the hunt.
