The film, freely adapted from Curzio Malaparte's novel, takes place in 1943. The American troops have just freed Naples. In these troubled time, the conquerors and the conquered clash. Women sell their bodies and their babies; German prisoners are worth their weight in gold. This all-embracing fresco starkly portrays some of the tragic events which occured during the last war and vividly depicts the confrontation between the Anglo-Saxon and Latin worlds.
