Julien Sorel, a young man of humble origins, becomes the lover of Madame de Rénal. Overcome with remorse, she breaks off their affair. After a short stay in the seminary, Julien becomes the secretary of a Marquis and seduces his daughter. Plans for their marriage are set. Seeking for more information on Julien, the Marquis goes to Madame de Rénal who is unyieldingly harsh on Julien. In a rage, Julien tries to kill her. He then realizes how much he loves his former mistress and resigns himself to his death sentence.
