Giovanni, a young actor, returns to his hometown for Pippo's funeral. His twin brother had committed suicide after breaking up with Vanda. The family has agreed not to tell his mother, a devout Catholic, about the suicide. Giovanni and Vanda fall in love but Pippo's ghost haunts Vanda and Giovanni cannot get his mother's devastating grief out of his mind. When their respective banes are finally abated, the lovers can go off to live together.
