Charles, a bashful boy from the country goes to Paris for his studies. He lives with his cousin Paul, a student and lazy braggart. Despite Charles discomfort with his cousin's friends, he falls in love with Florence who really likes him. But she succumbs to Paul. Charles tries to drown his sorrow in work but fails the exams whereas Paul passes. At his wits' end, Charles attempts, one last time, to see if Paul's luck will hold.
