Tartuffe, a swindler passing off as a devout man, moves in with the wealthy Orgon family. The whole family rebels against the stranger's authority and questions his good faith. But Orgon seems blind to the stranger's faults, stubbornly refuses to acknowledge his mistakes and decides to disinherit his family in favor of his only confident. After his stage performance in Molière's immortal play, Gérard Depardieu directs the screen version in a production which highlights its contemporary themes.
