The unequal struggle between big department stores and small shops at the end of the nineteenth century. Mouret, a former salesman with the business sense of a genius, becomes the successful manager of the first department store, " Au Bonheur des Dames", and ruins Baudi, the unlucky owner of a neighboring shop " Le Petit Elbeuf". He even robs him of the affection of his niece Denise, despite the jealousy and intrigues of the treacherous Madame Desforges.
