Dorgeval and Duprat are both captains basking in the triumph of Bonaparte's army as they enter Italy. During their journey, they meet Carlotta, a lovely Italian Countess who is bored to distraction and thrilled by the arrival of the French. However, unlike what she expected, the Frenchmen's manner is hardly romantic. Shortly later, five stray French soldiers join them. The beautiful young woman and the seven men wage an endlessly frivolous battle between the French and Austrian lines.
