Ten year old Roberto is an apprentice mason with an ear for music. Realizing the child's talent, Maréchal, an elderly organ player, sets out to give him a musical education and successfully trains him to become a conductor. Roberto's virtuosity attracts the attention of a venal impresario who signs Roberto for a concert tour where only cheap tunes will be played. Roberto's last meeting with Maréchal stirs the young man to be true to his calling. He finds the courage to bend the orchestra to his will and to play beautiful music.
