Graciliano Ramos, a famous Brazilian writer, refuses to support Getulio Vargas's dictatorship. Suspected of having been involved in an illegal movement, he is arrested March 3, 1936 and sent to a penitentiary on Grande Island. Though he is sick and underfed, he is nonetheless allowed to write. When he is freed, he manages with the help of the other convicts to hide his Prison Memoirs from the jailers' search.
