An ambitious young man from the provinces, Octave Mouret, arrives in Paris during the Second Empire. He enters the service of Madame Hédouin who manages a department store. Married to a poor tradesman, Berthe rapidly becomes Octave's mistress and he uses his business sense to improve her husband's situation. Madame Hédouin then realizes that she may have found the ideal business associate in Octave.
