Twice a year, captain Pierre loads cargo on his barges -'L'Hirondelle' and 'La Mésange' - and conveys it from Belgium to France. His wife, Griet and sister-in-law Marthe accompany him on the trips. He rounds up his modest income by smuggling precious stones into France. The arrival of a new pilot with designs on Marthe and Griet and a craving for the diamonds sows the seeds of discord aboard.
