Pozdnycheff is a pleasure-seeking young man from Saint Petersburg. His thoughtlessness once destroyed the marital bliss of a childhood friend who committed suicide. The memory has haunted Pozdnycheff ever since. However, when he gets married, he is so insanely jealous that he attempts to murder his wife and a violinist he believes is her lover. Pozdnycheff is arrested and sentenced to prison. But his still devoted wife is waiting from him when he is released.
