In 1912, a Russian officer is wrongly accused of having stolen important papers. Since his alibi means revealing that he spent the night with a colonel's wife, he accepts his sentence not to compromise his lover. The officer manages to escape, disguised as a lowly boatman. But truth prevails, the colonel commits suicide, and the lovers are together again.
