Noël, a widower is a simple, down-to-earth worker. He takes in Marthe, the daughter of one of his co-workers and falls in love with her. She is moved by his kindness and agrees to marry him. But once married, Marthe becomes obnoxious, takes a lover, bends her husband to her every whim, and schemes to keep him away from his parents. She dies in an accident and Noël, a widower once more, is reunited with his family.
