Baron de Kempelen helps a Polish friend fighting Russia by hiding him in the body of "chess-playing" robot the Baron has made. Catherine II plays a game of chess with the robot and loses. She spitefully orders the execution of the machine. The Baron having arranged for his friend's escape by taking his place is shot by a firing squad.
