Dagobert, a rake and sinner rolled into one, goes to Rome to ask Pope Honorius to forgive him for his sins. In Rome he stumbles upon plots, false popes, genuine assassins, and especially the beautiful princess Hemereé, the Emperor of Byzantium's sister. He falls madly in love with her but the monk Otarius has one last betrayal up his sleeve that will put an end to Dagobert's plans.
