Marcel first steals Andrée's jewels and money, and then courts the lovely kept woman. He assures her he will catch the culprit and asks her to come with him on a trek to France. Their journey in pursuit of thief turns into a romantic interlude. Andrée finds out the truth, but she loves Marcel and tells him so. Marcel prefers to break it off rather than spoil their idyllic affair. Marcel will never learn that Andrée has chosen death rather than a life without his love.
