But a chance visit takes Pierre to a dying patient's bedside where he finds out that the young man had been his wife's lover. Madeleine spends the whole night explaining the circumstances that impelled her to become unfaithful. As the probing confession unfolds, the very substance of the couple is laid bare as the dawn rises on a new day.
