Mr de Saint-Riquier, a widower, lives in his castle with his step-daughter Henriette and an old serving woman. Notoriously mad Henriette schemes to make the local doctor and gamekeeper fall in love with her so they will help her kill her step-father. Mr de Saint-Riquier dies in a phony hunting accident. Henriette's apparent triumph is thwarted when the faithful servant sets fire to the castle to avenge her master.
