Carlo Levi, a writer, painter and doctor, is sentenced to three years house arrest in a remote town in Lucania because of his stand against fascism. He discovers a totally destitute region where he begins to forge close relationships with the peasants in spite of the town officials' hostility. All the villagers come to say goodbye when Carlo is allowed to return to Turin after Mussolini grants him a pardon. Based on Carlo Levi's famous autobiographical novel.
