An eminent, aging surgeon, Guillaume Vautier falls in love with a young fairground entertainer called Hélène. Although she loves Jean, a trapeze artist, she lets herself be tempted by Vautier's opulent life and ends up living with him. One day, Hélène runs into Jean who talks her into joining his roving life. Although Vautier wants her back, he agrees to tend Jean, saving his life after a trapeze accident. Realizing how much the young people love each other, Vautier moves on.
