It all started in London, outside Highgate cemetery, where Danglard and Camille make a macabre discovery: 19 pairs of shoes, with a foot in each one. A severed foot. Events then jump to a house in a Parisian suburb, where Adamsberg and Retancourt are confronted with the bloodiest massacre of their careers: a body chopped into so many pieces that there's nothing left of it. As Adamsberg's Austrian counterpart says, whoever did that is a Zerquetscher.
