Threatened with exposure, a young lawyer joins the Foreign Legion. Several years later, he meets Helena, an amnesiac prostitute he believes to be Sylvia, the woman he sacrificed himself for. When he is discharged from the Legion, he plans to return to France with Helena. But he runs into Sylvia and realizes that his love for Helena is just a fancy. So, he deserts her and goes back into battle, despite a death foretold by a gifted fortune-teller.
