Nolff, a gruff fisherman, lives for the sea, believing that the land breeds only ruin and corruption. He lives with his wife and children, a daughter and a son. However, drawn by the city and its attractions, his son goes to a cabaret which makes him abject and depraved in his father's eyes. For the old man, his son has forfeited his right to life. He casts him out to sea, leaving the young man's fate to the ocean waves.
