Marielle, a forest ranger's daughter, is in love with licentious Grattet. Her family would like her to marry honest Aubertet. Marielle's father stumbles upon the depraved young man while he's poaching, so Grattet kills him and then hides in the young woman's bedroom. He uses her as his alibi when he is accused of murder. Grattet finally confesses to the crime but goes on a binge and accidentally dies.
