Cesar Dandieu is an honest cashier who works for an oil company, Fernand Mouchette is an absent-minded inventor. He has just proposed a new type of carburetor to the company, when Cesar is to hand the day's cash to his boss. They cross paths, and exchange, unawares, their respective but identical-looking attaché cases. Cesar hands over the case with the carburetor and goes to jail. In the meantime, Fernand returns home where Adele, his charming fiancée is waiting for him...
