An investigation into a major financial collapse

Gaumont USA has acquired the adaptation rights to OPUS, a book by investigative journalist Gareth Gore examining the 2017 collapse of Banco Popular. Once considered a stable Spanish bank, it was sold for one euro, resulting in significant losses for shareholders and raising serious questions.

In his book, Gore looks into the bank’s internal workings and the networks of influence that may have shaped its trajectory over several decades. He outlines connections between governance, financial interests, and religious affiliation, offering a detailed account of a complex system.

A project aligned with Gaumont’s editorial approach

With this adaptation, Gaumont USA continues to focus on grounded, real-world stories with international appeal. The project reflects a broader strategy of developing content rooted in strong local contexts—here, Spain—while remaining accessible to global audiences.

OPUS offers a perspective on responsibility and power dynamics,” said Nicolas Atlan, President of Gaumont USA. “It provides solid material for an on-screen adaptation.”

Christian Gabela, SVP & Head of Spain, LatAm, and US-Latino, highlighted the narrative dimension of the book: “The story is built on thorough reporting, while unfolding with the pace of a political thriller.”

From investigation to screen

The adaptation of OPUS aims to reflect the different layers of the book, from financial facts to political stakes and personal stories. The project will take a measured approach, grounded in the depth of Gareth Gore’s reporting.

Gore, whose work has appeared in Bloomberg and Reuters, will be involved in the development. He sees the adaptation as a way to bring this story to a wider audience.

Gaumont: a legacy of storytelling

As the world’s oldest film company, Gaumont continues to produce a wide range of films and series for both theatrical release and streaming platforms. Its catalogue includes over 1,600 titles, from The Fifth Element to Lupin.

This new project reflects Gaumont’s ongoing commitment to developing contemporary stories that resonate with audiences worldwide.
