Czar Paul 1st is the reigning despot of Saint Petersburg. His violent anger and childish whims have earned him the hatred of his underlings. Although Lord Chancellor Pahlen is his friend, he plots to force the Czar to abdicate for the good of Russia, and gains the support of the young czar, Alexander by promising that his father won't be executed. But the Czar categorically refuses to abdicate and dies at the hands of the dissenters.
