In 1880, Mr Clay, a wealthy merchant, takes it upon himself to turn an old legend into reality. According to the tale, a sailor received five guineas from an old man to spend the night with his beautiful young wife. Mr Clay finds a young woman to play the wife and offers her to Paul, a passing sailor. The night comes off as planned, but the sailor and the woman fall in love. Contrary to what Mr Clay had hoped, Paul will never tell a soul what happened.
