In 1944, in a french village, a forty year old spinster called Jeanne lives under her mother's thumb. The authoritarian chatelaine has convinced her daughter that she is just plain ugly and stupid. Jeanne takes in Pierre, a wounded, blind young man. They become lovers and run away to Paris where a doctor gives Pierre his sight back. In fear of his reaction when he is able to see her, Jeanne disappears. However, the young man finds her and "recognizes" the woman he loves.
