After the 1940 Armistice, French aviators refusing to become captives of war decide to go to Russia and continue the fight against Nazi Germany, alongside the Soviet Allies. Their escape brands them as deserters in the eyes of many. But the pilots valiantly engage in the first air-battles over Russia and receive a hero's welcome upon their return two years later.
