1907, in a small Swedish village, Helena Ekdahl, the widow of a theater entertainer, is preparing the sumptuous, traditional Christmas celebrations. The large manor is bustling with activity. But later Oscar, one of her sons, dies of a brain hemorrhage. Emilie, his widow, remarries the town Bishop, a strict puritan. The children, Fanny and Alexander, now have to leave the cozy family home for the cold, gloomy Bishop's palace.
