Synopsis :  The saga of four generations of a French family during three wars. In 1871, Pierre is killed during the siege of Paris. His eldest surviving daughter brings up her two brothers. One brother marries and has two children, Alain and Marie. The other brother leaves for the colonies. Alain dies during World War I and Marie marries a painter. They have a son called Christian who becomes a doctor. Christian marries Nicole just before leaving for the front in 1939.

Just as the invaders are about to hang the band of despoiled friends, Chérie saves them. They leave the island just as the waves engulf the atoll.
