Synopsis : Per saldare i suoi debiti, Madame de... vende degli orecchini che suo marito, il Generale de..., le aveva regalato e finge di averli persi. Il Generale, avvertito dal gioielliere a cui la moglie aveva venduto gli orecchini, li riscatta e li regala ad un'amante che, a sua volta, li rivende. Li compra il barone Donati, che si innamora di Madame de... a cui offre gli orecchini in segno di amore. Il percorso di questi orecchini avrà delle conseguenze drammatiche.
