Synopsis :  In a French village during the Occupation, an old man and his niece are forced to take in a German officer. The man is thoughtful, well-read and in favor of a rapprochement between the two countries. But his every attempt at conversation is thwarted by his hosts' stubborn silence. During a leave in Paris, the officer realizes what Nazi Germany is really planning. Sick at heart, he volunteers for the Russian front. As he leaves the village, the young woman breaks her silence for a word of farewell.

Synopsis :  New York. A French UN Delegate has disappeared into thin air. Moreau, a reporter, and Delmas, an alcoholic photographer, try to find the Frenchman. Their only lead is the picture of three women. After visiting all three, one of the women they visit tries to commit suicide. Moreau and Delmas get her to confess that the delegate is in her home where he died from a heart attack. Moreau considers the case closed whereas Delmas sees the opportunity for a scandalous scoop.

He rapes Denise who tries to commit suicide. When Thérèse finds out the reasons for her sister's deed, she forces Max to propose to her sister. But he falls madly in love with Thérèse.
