Synopsis :  Sally Matthews (Susan Sarandon), una joven canadiense, sueña con una vida mejor. En realidad, lleva diez años soñándola, desde que dejara Saskatchewan. Su meta inmediata se concentra en el negocio del juego y en convertirse en la primera mujer croupier para poder dar su salto al casino de Monte Carlo, lugar que ella tiene idealizado como sinónimo de vida lujosa y glamourosa. Su principal obstáculo será su propio marido, que ha vuelto a las andadas como traficante de drogas. Por otro lado, Lou Pascal (Burt Lancaster), un antiguo residente de Atlantic City también involucrado en asuntillos mafiosos, ha de verse con el marido de Sally para comprarle las drogas, pero la situación se enturbia y este resulta asesinado. Ahora Sally será el objetivo de los mafiosos, que amenazan con acabar con su vida si esta no les devuelve el dinero que les pertenece. Lou tratará de ayudarla y enseguida se enamorará de ella.
